A root canal may seem like a daunting procedure, but the benefits make the process worth it. Root canals save your natural tooth by removing bacteria from the infected root canal. In doing this, it also prevents the tooth from getting infected again. By the end of the root canal, your tooth is essentially good as new.
At Walton Dentistry, we ensure that the Loganville community has access to efficient root canal treatments made as comfortable as possible. Dental technology has advanced so much in recent years. With root canal therapy, you don’t feel anything and it’s often done in an hour. The pain felt from an infected tooth is often much worse than any post-procedural pain. We’re here to answer any questions and address any concerns to help you feel better about the process.
The Root Canal Process
Understanding exactly what occurs during treatment can help many patients lessen the anxiety that often surrounds root canals.
You may start to realize something is wrong with your tooth if you experience severe pain while chewing or biting, a chipped or cracked tooth, extreme and/or lingering sensitivity to heat or cold, swollen, tender or darkening gums, and more. These are all signs there could be an infection in your mouth that needs attention. It is important to take these signs seriously so we can catch them early.
The root canal procedure starts with an X-ray to ensure we’re targeting the infection correctly. Then, you’ll be administered anesthetic to numb your tooth. The tooth will then be isolated to keep it clean and dry during the procedure. Small instruments are used to make an opening in the crown of your tooth as we begin to clean the pulp and root canal. Finally, after the canal is clean and space has been made, we fill the canal with a safe and long-lasting dental material. This ensures the sealing of your root canal so that infections cannot get in later.
You may experience sensitivity in the days that follow your root canal, especially if you experienced pain in that tooth before your procedure. It’s normal to notice the tooth in question for a few days following the procedure, but please contact our office if you experience severe pain or pressure for more than a few days. You will likely be expected back for another appointment to make sure you’re healing correctly and also place a permanent filling and crown on the tooth.
Root Canal Advantages
There are many advantages you’ll enjoy after your root canal procedure. Ultimately, your tooth should go back to “normal” which means you can chew efficiently and bite with typical force. Your tooth will also have a natural appearance as opposed to a silver crown or veneer appearance. A successful root canal also protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain, and ensures that the same tooth won’t get infected again.
